The beauties of Alfred, NY

 

  

What a beautiful little town!  I was quite enamored of Alfred, of course I was there during probably the most beautiful weather they have - 72 degrees and sunny!  The campus was great, we had great conversation with the 'locals' and even the food was amazing.  Nana's Japanese Cafe was out of this world.

Corning and Ithaca

I'll have to post more pictures of Corning, but this was our last night and trip to Ithaca for amazing Thai food and some really awesome ice cream.  I had cinnamon that tasted just like it did at King's in Bethel Park.

We broke up the trip to Corning with a really nice stop in Lewisburg.  Phoebe made us some awesome home made pizza which we ate while the kids enjoyed the Elmo and Cookie Monster cupcakes that Elisabeth brought. A good time was had by all.

Morning Thoughts on the Nature of Art

Irony does not equal art, conversely an object lacking irony but representing other essential artistic quality such as beauty, intelligence and skillful craftsmanship should not be disregarded from from the realm of art.  The confusion in the art world that has ensued since the end of Modernism has caused a cynicism that seems to reject these qualities as valid.  This seems to me to be the basis for why much of the decorative arts, both historical and current are ignored by the mainstream art world.  However, if we can continue to build a strong community of Dec Arts/Craft scholars that is a moot point.  : )
And yes, I know it's only 8am.

Research Trip to Upstate New York

 

Really great roadside ice cream stand - Sno Top in Manlius, NY.  We stop on the way back from Cazanovia to Syracuse.
